MENTOPLASTY (CHIN SURGERY)

The chin is one of the reference points in the aesthetic study of the face. Along with the nose, it is one of the most important structures to define the face profile. The ideal chin should be in a position aligned with the glabella line (region between the eyebrows and the nose), reaching a harmonious set with the nose, eyes and mouth. The chin may be in a more advanced or more retracted position, depending on the individual patient.

The most common mentoplasty is one that tries to correct a retracted chin (retrognathia) through a silicone implant.

RECOMMENDATION

For those people who have small chins, facial disproportion.

TYPE OF ANESTHESIA

Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia can be used.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

A silicone or Porex prosthesis is placed on the chin, the incision can be inside the mouth or outside (subentonian). The prosthesis is placed above the chin bone and under a layer that covers the bone (periosteum).

There are two types of prostheses: silicone and Porex. Silicone prosthesis is the most used, cheapest and it is not necessary to change it. In some cases, the prosthesis can lead to bone wear due to the pressure exerted. The Porex prosthesis needs to be fixed to the bone with titanium screws, it has a higher cost and, as it is fixed to the bone, it does not present any risk of absorption.

ADMISSION TIME

Usually the patient is discharged on the same day, he can stay for 12 hours.

POSTOPERATIVE

Avoid foods with a very hot or hard consistency. Avoid physical exercise for 21 days, maintain good oral hygiene without manipulating the scar (use non-alcoholic oral antiseptics). A no less important issue is not to sleep with your chin resting on the pillow, we must avoid pressure and trauma in the region for 2 months.

COMPLICATIONS

We may have: infection, bruises, chin asymmetry, irregularities, opening stitches.

DEFINITIVE RESULT

After surgery, the result becomes visible, swelling and inflammation last for a month after the procedure. As with any surgery, the result closest to the end is seen in 6 months.
